Reminder!

Please remember, we are a nut free classroom (except the teacher, of course!).  Please remember to send your second grader with snacks and a lunch that does not contain nuts.  This includes snacks that are made in a factory that processes nuts.  Thank you for helping to keep our class healthy and safe!

Moving right along!

Well, it is Tuesday…. (but it feels like a Monday!)  It is hard to get back in the swing of school.  Today, we talked about how during the summer, it can be tricky to decide between swimming and a great book…  So, we do lots of quick check-ins during these weeks, to see what we remember from first grade, (and the summer).  We started to complete a beginning of the year assessment in math today.  Our job was: to do the best that we can, and show what we remember.  Oh, and to realize that we probably won’t know everything on that check-in.  It is okay to not know everything, but we have to give it our best effort.  This will help me to group the kids for our daily Everyday Math lessons, and to make sure that I am meeting their needs.  We reviewed some short vowel sounds today, and practiced some high frequency words.  We are reviewing and learning some routines, that should be in full swing, by next week.

Thank You!!!

Thank you for all the incredible donations!  We truly appreciate the soft tissues, and all the disinfectant wipes, and other incredible “green” cleaners!  We wipe down our desks after snacks and at the end of the day, so I greatly appreciate all of the thoughtful donations!

STEM fun!!!

STEM is the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  We had some fun with our first STEM challenge today.  The kids had thirty minutes to create the tallest tower that they could, using spaghetti and mini marshmallows.  It was great to hear their thinking, and for them to be able to explain what they would do different next time.  Ask your second grader how they approached this challenge.
