This weeks’ STEAM activity asked our second graders to transform their second grade friends into snow people. Some of the requirements were that they were white, had a nose, eyes, a hat and a scarf. There were parts of this STEAM challenge that were harder than we thought. After a few weeks of pretty challenging visual-spatial challenges, this was A LOT of fun!

This Week in Wonders…
Snowflakes…take 3!
So… We have finally completed our third, and final snowflake STEAM challenge! This week, the kids were challenged to create a snowflake that falls the quickest, and a snowflake that falls the slowest. In three Fridays, we went from having no idea how to make a paper snowflake, to engineering a snowflake with a certain falling speed. I was very impressed with the amount of thinking and flexibility the kids put into this challenge. Good work second graders!

This week in Wonders…
Busy week ahead!
Wow, January is flying by, already! This week, we have an incredibly busy week, in the classroom. We will all be completing our second AIMsweb benchmarks in both reading and math. I am anxious to see the wonderful progress the kids will make on these! Also, some of our second graders will be taking some NWEA assessments on computers. Not all second graders will be doing this.
We have also come to the end of Unit 4 in Everyday Math, so we will be completing the Unit 4 assessment, as well as a cumulative assessment this week. Phew! I’m tired just thinking about all that brainpower! I won’t be sending home math homework this week. The kids will be working hard during the day, and deserve a break! It’s always a great idea to continue practicing telling time, and continuing to work on basic math facts.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me, should you have any questions or concerns.
Snowflakes!
Our STEM activity this week involved a lot of visual spatial skill. Children had to match a folded and cut paper snowflake with an unfolded paper snowflake. This was a pretty challenging task. Next, students had to create an 8-sided, 12-sided, snowflake with a hole in the middle, and a snowflake with a star in the middle. This was a particularly challenging STEM this week. We will continue to work on snowflake activities throughout the week.
