This week, we took our first Reading Counts quiz! And… EVERYONE PASSED! Reading Counts is a web based reading assessment program. This week, our book buddies in Mrs. Howe’s class read us a picture book, and taught us how to take a reading counts quiz. The kids are very excited to start taking more quizzes on the books they have read!

Salute!
What a great way to warm up our minds this morning!!! Our room was buzzing with excitement this morning. The kids really loved playing this math game. Salute is played with three players; two players and a dealer. Each player picks a card without looking at it, and places it on their forehead. The dealer adds the two cards up, and the two players try to figure out what their card is, using the sum of the two cards, and their own card. It was a lot of fun! This week, we will continue to practice some addition and subtraction strategies.
Let’s chat!
I have sent you all a sign-up through sign-up genius, for parent/teacher conferences. Let me know, if you think 30 minutes will not be sufficient, and/or if the allotted times do not work for you.

Yoga!!!
Thank you Mrs. Ronan for spending some time with us on Friday morning! We were FULL of energy, and yoga helped to center us, and slow us down a little bit! We were SOOOOOO excited to have yoga in our schedule! Thank you Mrs. Ronan for your patience with us! We can’t wait to schedule another session!
Open Response
Thursday we worked on an Open Response problem in math. For this problem, the kids needed to work together to discuss strategies for using ten frames. This is a way for the children to visually see representations of numbers. It is also a way for them to internalize that five counters/dots equal 5. This helps the student then make connections to sums to ten, and double facts more easily. I was very impressed with how the kids were able to explain their thinking in this open response! I am proud of how much progress they have already made!!!

Pumpkin Investigations!
We completed some pumpkin explorations, predicting and measuring the height, circumference, stem height, and number of seeds. It was fun to see some kids overcoming some discomfort with the feeling of pumpkin seeds, and insides. It was A LOT of fun! We also talked about a lot of strategies for counting a large number of items, such as pumpkin seeds. Check out some of the great expressions!
